When you move to a new city, chances are that you are going to have thousands of new things to see and explore. In the city, there are restaurants to eat at, bars where you can get a drink, parks to relax in, tourist attractions to visit, and tons of people to talk to about their way of life.

Exploring a new city can be fun, but it can also be life-changing! You never know who you will meet or what you will discover. You may find a new food that you love or a person that you may want as a partner.

Traveling around and immersing yourself in your new city can also help you enjoy your alone time. After such a busy day, you may just want to go home and relax.

Stay Busy

If you are living alone in the city for the first time in your life, you may have an overwhelming sense of loss or emptiness.

But, the great thing about the city is the tremendous amount of things that can help keep you busy. Sometimes all we need to help us transition into a new lifestyle that has fewer people, such as friends and family, is to keep ourselves occupied.

Too much free time can cause us to overthink our situation, which may lead us to feel sad or lonely. Being alone in the city doesn’t mean you have to be lonely, it just means you have more time to discover who you are and follow a different path!

Spend time organizing your new home, pick up extra hours at work, or download a new streaming service with shows that you can binge!

Join A Class

If you don’t favor being alone, it may help to join a class. Classes are full of people with similar interests that you can enjoy and become more acquainted with. The city is full of classes that you can take, everything from painting, martial arts, sewing, yoga, or cooking.

Pick a class that you know you will love, or try something completely brand-new. Choosing something new to try, will help you discover more things about yourself.

It may also introduce you to people who are different than you, which can help expand your world and life views.

Go To Shows

Going to shows is one of my favorite things to do when I move to a new city.

As an introvert, I don’t always enjoy conversations with new people, but I do love being around them. Shows allow you to be around many people and receive energy from the group without the pressure of keeping up with a long conversation.

The city has many types of shows to choose from such as comedy skits, open mic nights, musical theatre, and even movies. Going to shows will help you stay busy, meet people, and enjoy your time while living in a new city.

Invite People To Visit

Moving to a new city can be a great way to have old friends and family members come to see you and explore your new home. It can be something that you can look forward to and a positive way to overcome feeling alone.

Having friends and family visit every few months will allow you time to be alone when they aren’t there, but as soon as you begin to feel homesick they are there to help you overcome the feelings of loneliness.

It doesn’t have to be old friends that you invite over to your house. If you make new friends you can invite them over for Sunday dinners, game nights, or brunch. Having gatherings with new friends will also help you adjust to being alone in a new city.

Adopt A Pet

If you are an animal lover, like me, then you may want to look into adopting a pet. City life can be busy, cramped, and lack the outdoor space needed for certain animals. Always adopt a pet that can fit into your lifestyle.

You never want to adopt an animal that will have its needs neglected due to your living situation. Opt for animals like cats or small dogs if you live in an apartment.

Only adopt a medium or large breed of dog if you have a large living space with outdoor space for them to get their needed amount of exercise.

Pets are known to help relieve feelings of depression and anxiety. Having a pet can help you feel less lonely and help to pass time and give you a feeling of purpose.

Get A Roommate

If you don’t enjoy being alone, you can always have a roommate move into your new place or vice versa. Roommates are a great way to help you overcome feelings of loneliness, and they can also help give you the inside scoop on your new surroundings.
